Mrs. Joy Ikanih

Mrs. Joy Ikanih was an educator with over 35 years of experience. She received her Nigerian Certificate of Education from Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education in Owerri. From there she proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she received her Bachelor Degree in Education. Equipped with her education, Joy started her teaching career at the Anglican Grammar School located in Achi, Enugu. She spent many years teaching and won the admiration of her fellow staff and the education community. Joy was known as a meticulous teacher who was very organized, giving detailed attention to her lesson plans.

Furthering her education, she began her Masters at Nsukka. Before her completion she left for the United States of America where she lived with her husband and children. Joy immediately jumped into teaching with the Milwaukee Public Schools system. She began as a substitute teacher focused on middle and high school. She decided to specialize in special education to support special needs children learn and become educated. Joy completed her Masters in Education Counseling from the National Lewis University. She was a department lead at Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she spent over two decades working.

Joy is known for saying “ the best thing I can give to my children is an education, and to know God.” In honor of the life of Mrs. Joy Ikanih, the school created the Joy Ikanih Memorial Scholarship to support needy families and children access education despite their economic position or disability. This school was a part of her vision to educate as many children as she possibly could from her home country, Nigeria.
